NMFS manages the groundfish fishery in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area (BSAI) according to the Fishery Management Plan for Groundfish of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Management Area (FMP) prepared by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council under authority of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. In July , Alaska Factory Trawler Association (now American Factory Trawler Association) records indicate the number had grown to 68 active factory trawlers. Most notable of those fishing outside the EEZ are the tuna fishing vessels based in San Diego and Los Angeles, California, or Honolulu, Hawaii.
The multi species groundfish trawlers of the North Pacific and Bering Sea are among the most innovative and successful in science/industry collaboration to reduce environmental impact and increase production of the 'perfect' protein - Wild, worthy of Organic, Fish from the waters off Alaska. Overview. The groundfish fisheries in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands (BSAI) and the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) are managed through two separate but complementary fishery management plans (FMPs): the BSAI Groundfish FMP and the GOA Groundfish FMPs establish management measures that are consistent with the ten National Standards established through the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery.
The Alaska pollock Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands fishery has been independently certified as sustainable to the MSC Fisheries Standard. Due to the Covid outbreak the MSC has issued a derogation that allows a 6-month extension for all fishery certificates, condition deadlines and fishery assessment/audit activities.
This Fishery Management Plan (FMP) governs groundfish fisheries of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Management Area (BSAI). The FMP management area is the United States (U.S.) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Bering Sea and that portion of the North Pacific Ocean adjacent to the.
The eastern Bering Sea shelf was completed on J During survey operations in the northern Bering Sea, the map will be updated daily to show the stations that will be sampled on the current day by the FV Vesteraalen (star with V) and the FV Alaska Knight (star with A) Bottom temperature (°C) in each 20x20 nautical mile grid cell.
NMFS proposes harvest specifications, prohibited species bycatch allowances, and associated management measures for the groundfish fishery of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area (BSAI).
This action is necessary to establish harvest limits and associated management measures. Inwestern Alaska commercial fisheries leaders established the Bering Sea Fishermen’s Association to give the subsistence and commercial fishermen a voice in the sustainability and development of Bering Sea and western Alaska fishery resources.
And what a voice it has become. Inapproximately 1, vessels participated in the Pacific halibut fishery off Alaska, and vessels participated in the Federal hook-and-line groundfish fisheries off Alaska.
Logbook research indicates that of the hook-and-line vessels that caught halibut also harvested groundfish in the waters off Alaska that year. Bob Lauth has been a Fisheries Research Biologist for the NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle for 26 years.
Bob leads the Bering Sea Group, which is responsible for conducting summertime surveys of bottom fishes, crabs, and other bottom-dwelling creatures in the offshore marine waters of.
Greenpeace applauds the decision by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC) to limit bottom trawl fisheries in the northern Bering Sea.
Any cutback on this destructive fishery practice is welcome news. However, in this case, it’s misleading. Industrial fishing, with the exception of the use of bottom trawlers, will continue in these areas. The purpose of this survey is to collect data on the distribution and abundance of crab, groundfish, and other benthic resources in the eastern Bering Sea.
These data are used to estimate population abundances for the management of commercially important species in the by: 5. Amendment 94 to the fishery management plan for groundfish of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area to require trawl sweep modification in the Bering Sea flatfish fishery, establish a modified gear trawl zone, and revise boundaries of the northern Bering Sea research area and Saint Matthew Island habitat conservation area.

Groundfish assessments depend on bottom trawl surveys for fisheries independent biomass estimates and stock structure of many commercial and ecologically important fish and invertebrate species.
The Alaska Fisheries Science Center has begun a new time series of bottom trawl surveys from the upper continental slope of the eastern Bering Sea.
Febru — SEAFOOD NEWS — The Bering Sea federal trawl cod fishery closed in what may be record time on Feb. 11, just 22 days after the Jan.

Bering Sea crabbers are getting a first glimpse at how their upcoming fisheries may or may not pan out. At a three day meeting this week in Seattle managers and stakeholders are reviewing results of the summer trawl surveys for snow crab, bairdi Tanners and red king crab at Bristol Bay.
US - Bering Sea fish stocks are booming but its a mixed bag for groundfish in the Gulf of Alaska. Fishery managers will set catches this week for pollock, cod and other fisheries that comprise Alaska’s largest fish hauls that are taken from three to miles from shore.
